How to Verify a Public Adjuster’s License (State-by-State Links)

The short answer

Look the adjuster up by name or license number on your state insurance department’s lookup. Many states use the NAIC State Based Systems search. Our license numbers are listed on our Where We Work page so you can check them.

Official lookups by state

Use the state insurance department’s own site, not a link someone texts you.

If your state isn’t listed, start at the NAIC State Based Systems: license lookup or your state department of insurance’s website.

What to check

• The license is active, not expired or suspended.
• It is a public adjuster license. An independent or company adjuster license is different.
• It is for your state. A license in one state doesn’t cover another.
• If you are signing with a firm, whether the state also licenses the firm.

Red flags

• Pressure to sign during or right after the storm. North Carolina and South Carolina bar public adjusters from soliciting during a loss-producing occurrence (N.C. Gen. Stat. 58-33A-80 (standards of conduct); S.C. Code Title 38, Chapter 92 (public adjusters)), and North Carolina also bars soliciting between 9 p.m. and 9 a.m.
• An offer to pay or waive your deductible. South Carolina’s law prohibits it (S.C. Code Title 38, Chapter 92 (public adjusters)).
• A contract with the fee left blank, or no cancellation terms.
• Someone who offers to both adjust your claim and do the repairs. Missouri bars this (RSMo 325.055 (no repair contracts)).
